Why is recycling important?

Recycling is important to the future of our planet and is essential to the cities around the world and to the people who live in them.for many reasons. One of these is that we are fast using up the earths precious resources and many of these resources are not renewable. It is also important to start recycling as it takes considerably less energy to recycle an existing product than to source and make one from new.

Tell me more about why recycling is important...

The Recycling Process

Recycling involves processing used materials into new products in order to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air (from incineration) and water (from landfilling) pollution by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key part of waste management's "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"

Latest Airline Recycling Rankings

Responsibleshopper.org has recently released their figures to show which airlines are the most responsible with their recyclable waste and which ones are not.

To put the industry into perspective, it is estimated that US Airlines alone generates around 800 Million Pounds of waste per year, of which around 75 percent is made of recyclable materials, though only around 20 percent actually is recycled.

The surveys figures showed that the best recycling airlines where Delta, Virgin America, Southwest and Virgin Atlantic, while United and US Airways need to make serious improvements.

It has been suggested that the airlines industry could recycle almost 500 Million pounds more of waste products each year and this could be improved by initiating a comprehensive recycling program based around either minimizing or composting food waste and by providing better public information about their recycling programs, amongst other suggestions.
