Latest Airline Recycling Rankings

Responsibleshopper.org has recently released their figures to show which airlines are the most responsible with their recyclable waste and which ones are not.

To put the industry into perspective, it is estimated that US Airlines alone generates around 800 Million Pounds of waste per year, of which around 75 percent is made of recyclable materials, though only around 20 percent actually is recycled.

The surveys figures showed that the best recycling airlines where Delta, Virgin America, Southwest and Virgin Atlantic, while United and US Airways need to make serious improvements.

It has been suggested that the airlines industry could recycle almost 500 Million pounds more of waste products each year and this could be improved by initiating a comprehensive recycling program based around either minimizing or composting food waste and by providing better public information about their recycling programs, amongst other suggestions.

Maple Grove, USA launches new sort-free recycling program

City residents of Maple Grove are in tune with a new recycling progra, that involves the use of just one main rollable recycling bin.

The singular bin is linked to a recycling centre that collects at the materials in one pick up all in the same bin, negating the need to residents to seperate glass, paper and plastics.

By making the process simplier for the residents an extra 71 Tones per month of recyclable materials is collected, a great success.

According to a set of recently published figures, residents in South Oxfordshire are set to become the UK’s top recyclers. Since a new waste scheme was introduced only 6 weeks ago, the South Oxfordshire District Council has achieved a recycling rate of 70% for residents waste, which beats other Oxfordshire districts and puts them among the nation’s best.

Two different types of wheelie bins are used and collected at alternate times of the week, with one of the bins used solely for food waste, a pioneering scheme in the UK.

As of the 1st June residents will be awarded points for the amount of items they recycle. The points, collected through the weighing of wheelie bins at collection, can then be redeemed against the cost of other services, goods to buy or donated to charity.

The new scheme is in conjunction with a company called Recyclebank (who offer a simialar points based system in the US), and also with the council’s current waste contractors Veolia.
