Making a water filter isn’t that hard and could be a life saver if you are in an emergency situation. It does not matter if you are stuck in the wilderness or in an urban area when tied to questionable or plain out dirty water if you are in a position to locate some basic supplies and even pond water.

Since the standard person can simply survive about 3 days without water, it is required to be in a position to convert water that could get you to sick, or even kill you into clean and safe drinking water if you are ever placed in a position where the water is not safe to drink and you do not have a good, quality water filtration system, like a Berkey water filter.

First you will have to have a small water bottle that is plastic or some other kind of container that you are able to pour water in at the top with a small exit opening at the reduced end. This is the reason why a plastic water bottle is perfect. You can just cut the bottom off and invert it. Next you must find a huge green leaf from a tree. I wouldn’t use anything other than a tree leaf as some plants have toxins in them, but most trees won’t add anything harmful as it helps filter the water. This is in addition what will hold the next step in the filtration system you will have to have, and that is simple sand. Sand can be located close to anywhere globally with just a tiny searching.

Put the leaf at the small opening where the cap goes inside of the bottle, then fill the plastic bottle about ¾ of the way with sand. After this, you will have to have another leaf to assist keep the sand in place. Next is gravel. Pea sized or a little larger gravel is the next step. Fill all but about a half inch with the gravel, place an additional leaf and a larger rock on the leaf to aid keep the gravel in.

Next you will need something to catch the water in as it is filtered. Run about a half gallon of pond water, ditch water or any water you can find through the new filter to rinse the sediments in the gravel and sand. After you finish this, you can begin catching the water in the container you want to keep the water in.

This should clean the water up nicely even though it won’t be as clean as the berkey sport water filter, but it will filter the water to where it looks clean and will remove most of the debris and provide clear water. Once you filter the water, you will require to boil it for a full 12 minutes to ensure pathogens are dead. This knowledge could save your life in a serious event, but a better way to prepare is to make sure you have a travel berkey water filter ready so that you are able to just pour it in, and within a few minutes, you have clean and safe drinking water, and you are able to obtain it out of a ditch and still produce clean, safe water in barely minutes without the bother of finding what you need to make a filter, and there is no need to boil it after filtering.
